We wrote in September about agencies racing to influence Reddit for AI visibility. The citation data that has landed since explains why they are bothering, and it is a larger number than most people expect.
Most reporting on AI citations counts total mentions. That is the least useful version of the statistic. An answer synthesised from eight sources is not evenly weighted, and the first citation disproportionately shapes the framing that follows.
Reddit holds 20.4% of those first slots. One in five AI Overviews is anchored, at least partly, on a forum thread rather than on a vendor page, a review site or a trade publication.
It also accounts for 44% of the social citations appearing in AI Overviews, which means that when these systems reach for a human opinion, they reach for Reddit roughly half the time.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Share of social citations in AI Overviews | 44% |
| Share of all first-citation slots | 20.4% |
| Minimum citation share growth, Oct 2025 to Jan 2026 | 73% |
Reddit citation share grew at least 73% between October 2025 and January 2026 across every tracked category, and more than doubled in some. That is four months.
A share shift that fast is not a stable equilibrium you can plan around for years. It is either still climbing or about to correct, and the honest answer is that nobody publishing on this knows which.
What it does justify is treating Reddit as a monitored surface rather than an ignored one. You do not need a Reddit strategy to benefit from knowing what the top thread about your category currently says.
For B2B software and supply chain platforms the exposure is sharper than for consumer brands, because the buying committee researches in places the vendor does not control and often cannot see.
A three-year-old thread where someone complained about your onboarding can become the human-opinion layer in an AI answer a prospect reads before they ever reach your site. You will not see it in your analytics, and it will not show up as a lost deal with a reason attached.
The counterweight is not astroturfing, which the agency data already shows is both risky and ineffective. It is having accurate, current, substantive material about your category in the places these systems actually read, so the synthesised answer has something better to reach for.
We added AI answer monitoring to the same cadence as rank tracking. Ask the systems your buyers use what they say about your category and your name, and record it, because it changes faster than rankings do.
We started publishing the specifics that forums ask about and vendor sites avoid. Real implementation timelines, what the integration actually requires, where the product is a poor fit. That material gets cited because it answers the question being asked.
And we stopped measuring content success by ranking position alone. A page that never cracks the top five but gets pulled into AI answers is doing work that a rank tracker will score as failure.
The uncomfortable version of this data is that a meaningful share of what AI tells your prospects about you is being sourced from a place you do not own, cannot edit and mostly cannot see. The productive version is that it is readable, it is monitorable, and almost nobody in B2B is doing either yet.
